Artifact Desk is a local desktop viewer and editor for the files that AI coding tools and technical collaborators create. It gives each file the most understandable available view while keeping source accessible.
Is Artifact Desk free?
Yes. Artifact Desk Free is an unlimited local viewer with no account, watermark, file cap, or project cap. Editing, saving, conversion, printing, appearance themes, and filesystem changes require a Pro license or the 14-day Pro trial.
Does Artifact Desk upload my files?
No. Artifact contents are never uploaded. Reading, previews, and supported edits happen locally. Trial and license operations send limited product and device-license metadata to the Cedarwood license service, and Stripe handles purchase information at checkout.
Which operating systems are supported?
Artifact Desk is built for macOS and Windows. Personal covers one activated computer; Personal Plus covers up to three.
Can Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or another agent open a file in Artifact Desk?
Yes, once Artifact Desk is installed. Coding agents that can run local shell commands can ask the operating system to open a path in Artifact Desk. You can also paste a path, use Open Anything, double-click a registered file type, or drag a file into the app.
Is it a replacement for an IDE?
No. Artifact Desk is for understanding and making safe, supported changes to artifacts. It does not install dependencies, run source projects, or replace a developer's editor and build environment.
Can it convert every file into every other file?
No app can preserve meaning across every format. Artifact Desk offers exact copies and compatible, content-aware conversions. Unavailable or lossy targets stay visible with a specific explanation, and the original is never overwritten by default.
How is Artifact Desk related to MarkText?
Artifact Desk incorporates open-source materials including MarkText and preserves the applicable licenses. MarkText remains a focused Markdown editor; Artifact Desk extends the job to structured data, frontend artifacts, images, PDFs, unknown files, local organization, conversion, and nontechnical workflows.
